Hispanics in focus as GOP race intensifies
Hispanics in focus as GOP race intensifies Date: 27-01-2012
More than a million Hispanic voters are the prize as Republican presidential rivals Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich resume campaigning after a feisty, final debate before Florida's GOP primary. Romney was the aggressor in the second debate in four days Thursday night, pressing Gingrich to apologize for an ad labeling him as anti-immigrant and calling the idea "repulsive." Both men arranged for appearances Friday in Miami with the Hispanic Leadership Network on the day after the debate. The state has roughly 1.5 million Hispanic voters, who figure to play prominently in next Tuesday's Florida primary. Immigration sparked the first clash Thursday night, moments after the debate opened, when Gingrich responded to a question by saying Romney was the most anti-immigrant of all four contenders on stage. "That's simply inexcusable," the former Massachusetts governor responded.

Porn industry mulls leaving LA if condoms required
Hispanics in focus as GOP race intensifies Date: 19-01-2012
Some of the most prominent purveyors of porn say they'll start packing up their sex toys and abandoning the nation's porn capital if authorities carry through with a nascent effort to police adult film sets and order that every actor be outfitted with a condom. That effort took a serious leap forward Tuesday when the Los Angeles city council voted 9-1 to grant final approval to an ordinance that would deny film permits to producers who do not comply with the condom requirement. The measure now goes to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for approval. Before the measure can take effect, however, the council has called for the creation of a committee of police officials, the city attorney, state health officials and others to determine how it might be enforced. "It's going to be interesting to see how in fact they do try to enforce it and who's going to fund it, and all of the time and effort they're going to spend," said Steven Hirsch, co-founder and co-chairman of Los Angeles-based Vivid, one of the largest makers of erotic movies.

Commodities prices retreat on economic worries
Hispanics in focus as GOP race intensifies Date: 23-08-2010
Fears of a slowing U.S. economy sent most commodities prices lower Friday, including metals used in manufacturing. Traders are concerned about demand for metals and energy products a day after the Labor Department issued a downbeat unemployment report and the Federal Reserve of Philadelphia said manufacturing activity in the mid-Atlantic region has fallen this month. In addition, China is curbing lending and investment to keep its economic growth in check. That has investors around the world questioning whether Chinese companies will buy fewer raw materials.

Adding Fish Oil to Low-Fat/High-Carb Diet May Improve Cholesterol
Adding Fish Oil to Low-Fat/High-Carb Diet May Improve Cholesterol Date: 22-08-2010
For people with the metabolic syndrome -- a cluster of risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure, high levels of blood fats or triglycerides and high blood sugar -- adding a little fish oil to a diet low in saturated fats and high in complex carbohydrates might be just the ticket, a new study suggests. "When you add omega-3 to a high carbohydrate, low-fat diet, you can prevent the long-term adverse effect that a high-carbohydrate diet induces on [blood fats]," said study author Dr. Jose Lopez-Miranda, a professor of medicine at the Reina Sofia University Hospital and the University of Cordoba, Spain

Most US students think Beethoven is a dog
Most US students think Beethoven is a dog Date: 18-08-2010
Most young Americans entering university this year can't write in cursive, think email is too slow, that Beethoven's a dog and Michelangelo a computer virus, according to an annual list compiled by two academics at a US college. To students who will get their bachelor's degrees in 2014, Czechoslovakia has never existed, Fergie is a pop singer, not a duchess; Clint Eastwood is a sensitive movie director, not Dirty Harry; and John McEnroe stars in TV ads, not on the tennis court, Beloit College's "Mindset" list says.

Hacker builds $1,500 cell-phone tapping device
Most US students think Beethoven is a dog Date: 01-08-2010
A computer security researcher has built a device for just $1,500 that can intercept some kinds of cell phone calls and record everything that's said. The attack Chris Paget showed Saturday illustrates weaknesses in GSM, one of the world's most widely used cellular communications technologies. His attack was benign; he showed how he could intercept a few dozen calls made by fellow hackers in the audience for his talk at the DefCon conference here. But it illustrates that criminals could do the same thing for malicious purposes, and that consumers have few options for protecting themselves. Paget said he hopes his research helps spur adoption of newer communications standards that are more secure. "GSM is broken — it's just plain broken," he said. GSM is considered 2G, or "second generation," cellular technology. Phones that run on the newer 3G and 4G standards aren't vulnerable to his attack.

Why Are Southerners So Fat?
Most US students think Beethoven is a dog Date: 10-07-2009
People from Mississippi are fat. With an adult obesity rate of 33%, Mississippi has gobbled its way to the "chubbiest state" crown for the fifth year in a row, according to a new joint report by Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Alabama, West Virginia and Tennessee aren't far behind, with obesity rates over 30%. In fact, eight of the 10 fattest states are in the South.
