| Beer-drinking Women May Be Courting Psoriasis |
 |
Date: 17-08-2010 Women susceptible to the skin syndrome psoriasis may want to put down the stout and reach for a light beer. A new study finds that drinking regular beer increases the risk of psoriasis in women by over 70 percent.

According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, 2.5 percent of Caucasians and 1.3 percent of African-Americans have the disease. Doctors aren't sure of the exact cause of psoriasis but believe that something triggers the immune system, setting off a chain reaction that causes skin cells to reproduce too quickly.

An update to the record-keeping system last year found that between 1982 and 2007, there were 103 fatal, disabling or serious injuries recorded among female high school athletes, with the vast majority (67) occurring in cheerleading. The next most dangerous sports: gymnastics (nine such injuries) and track (seven).
